Riaz Ansary
Riaz Ansary was born June 13, 1956 in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father was Afghani and his mother an American of Finnish origin. He moved to the US in 1964 at the age of 8. After his parent’s separation, he was raised by his mother, a non-Muslim. He accepted Islam in 1979, in Pakistan, during a trip across Asia and stayed in Pakistan for about a year to study Islam.
 
He returned to America to work and try to give da‘wah. After marrying in 1985, he received a scholarship to the Islamic University of Madeenah. He graduated from its College of Sharee‘ah in 1993.
 
After graduation, he ended up working as a translator at the US branch of Imam Muhammad Ibn Sa‘ud University while simultaneously working as the imam of a Masjid in Frederick, Md.
 
He moved to the UAE in 1997, where he worked as a translator and editor with Dr. Bilal Philips and then as a teacher of Arabic and Islamic studies at the New Muslim Center of Sharjah, where he helped organize the first English-language khutbah program in the UAE.
 
He appeared frequently as a guest on Sharjah TV’s “Discover Islam;” then hosted a show by the same name on the Iqra satellite channel as well as appearing on Peace TV.
 
He has given lessons on Islam at various prisons, Masjids, schools and conferences in the US, England, Malaysia and the Philippines.
 
He completed his master’s degree in usool al-fiqh at the International Islamic University of Malaysia and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, also in Malaysia.
